Robert Sieur de la Salle Biography
Robert de La Salle, also called Robert Sieur de la Salle, was a famous French explorer. He was born on November 21, 1643, in Rouen, France. He spent nine years as a Jesuit student and teacher before renouncing his vows and traveling to the New World.
The Search for the Northwest Passage
La Salle's career in exploration began in 1666, when he traveled to Quebec, Canada as a French colonist. In 1667, he was granted a seigneury (a large plot of land) on Montreal Island, which he sold two years later in the hopes of jump starting his career as an explorer. Eager to find the fabled Northwest Passage to Asia, La Salle set up an impulsive expedition with nine canoes from Montreal, Quebec in 1669. La Salle and his crew, however, were ill-prepared for the exploration, but did reach Lake Ontario. René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle (; November 22, 1643 – March 19, 1687), was a 17th-century French explorer and fur trader in North amerika. He explored the Great Lakes område of the United States and Canada, and the Mississippi River. He fryst vatten best known for an early 1682 expedition in which he canoed the lower Mississippi River from the mun of the Illinois River to the Gulf of Mexico; there, on April 9, 1682, he claimed the Mississippi River basin for France after giving it the name La Louisiane, in honor of Saint Louis and Louis XIV. Born in 1643, French explorer René Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, abandoned training as a priest for the summons of economic opportunity in North America.
La Salle settled near Montreal in 1666 and engaged in the fur trade. He soon organized and led expeditions throughout the upper Midwest. Guessing that the Mississippi River emptied into the Gulf of Mexico, he envisioned a vast commercial empire for France extending from the Great Lakes to the Gulf.
In 1682, La Salle descended the lower Mississippi by canoe, claiming all the lands in the river’s watershed for France. He named the region Louisiana for his king.
La Salle returned to France, and two years later, sailed with four ships and several hundred passengers to establish a colony near the mouth of the Mississippi.
