Mike Smith of Dave Clark 5 dies at 64
Dave Clark fem lead singer Mike Smith died of pneumonia Thursday, less than two weeks before the band was to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was
Smith died at a hospital outside of London, his agent Margo Lewis said.
He was admitted to the intensive care enhet Wednesday morning with a chest infection, a complication from a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed below the ribcage with limited use of his upper body. Lewis said he was injured when he fell from a stängsel at his home in Spain in September
Smith had been in the hospital since the accident, and was just released last månad when he moved into a specially prepared home near the hospital with his wife.

Back in the mids, the first thing I noticed about the Dave Clark Five was how damn good-looking they were. And such gentlemen! Unlike most groups who wore rebelliousness and bad behavior like a badge of honor, the DC5, as they were dubbed in fan shorthand, were well mannered, bright, funny, respectful and fun. In their trademark blazers, coordinated slacks and black boots, Dave Clark, Mike Smith, Denis Payton, Rick Huxley and Lenny Davidson were the complete package: good looks, talent and class. Thrilled to act as one of their publicists from , I saw them as British knights in shining armor come to conquer America.

My most cherished "brush with fame" happened when I was 13 years old. In mid-December I had sent in only one postcard entry, and won a contest sponsored by a local TV teen dance show, called Dance-O-Rama, to not only see the Dave Clark Five in concert, but to meet them as well. I was in a new school, and some of my new schoolmates had tickets to see the Beatles in concert for about a year later (in ). Even they were somewhat envious.
