    Robert Sterling was a dashingly handsome actor who costarred with his wife Anne Jeffreys as a stylish pair of fun-seeking ghosts in the 1950s TV sitcom "Topper."

    The son of a professional baseball player, Sterling was born William Sterling Hart on Nov. 13, 1917, in New Castle, Pa. After signing with Columbia Pictures, his name was changed to Robert Sterling to avoid confusion with silent western star William S. Hart.

    A budding star at MGM in the early 1940s who appeared in dozens of films over the years, Sterling achieved his greatest fame on television in "Topper," in which he and Jeffreys played George and Marion Kerby, a married couple who were killed in an avalanche while on a European skiing vacation.

    American actor (1917–2006)

    Robert Sterling (born William Sterling Hart; November 13, 1917 – May 30, 2006) was an American actor. He was best known for starring in the television series Topper (1953–1955).[1]

    In 1960, Sterling was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to the television industry.

    Sterling was born William Sterling Hart in New Castle, Pennsylvania, 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Pittsburgh. The son of Chicago Cubs baseball player William S. Hart,[2] he attended the University of Pittsburgh[3] and worked as a clothing salesman before pursuing an acting career.

    Biography

    Robert Sterling found incredible success as an accomplished actor, appearing in a variety of films throughout his Hollywood career. Early on in his acting career, Sterling landed roles in various films, including "Ringside Maisie" (1941), the comedic adaptation "Two-Faced Woman" (1941) with Greta Garbo and "Johnny Eager" (1941). He also appeared in "I'll Wait For You" (1941), "This Time For Keeps" (1942) and "Somewhere I'll Find You" (1942). His rulle career continued throughout the forties and the fifties in productions like "Roughshod" (1949), "The Sundowners" (1950) and "Bunco Squad" (1950). He also appeared in the Kathryn Grayson adaptation "Show Boat" (1951). In the latter part of his career, he continued to act in "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" (1961), the Bob Hope comedy "A Global Affair" (1964) and the horror film "The Signal" (2008) with AJ Bowen.
