Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi
(1947-2004) A Palestinian political figure. In 1987, Rantisi co-founded the Palestinian movement Hamas. He was part of organizing early protests in Gaza that sparked the First Intifada. Rantisi was arrested/detained by Israel 4 times between 1988-1991, and was expelled by the Israeli government in the 1992 Mass Deportation to no-man's land in south Lebanon. Rantisi emerged as the spokesperson for the deportees and returned to the Gaza Strip in early 1993. He was instrumental in organizing Hamas's welfare network. By 1999, Rantisi was the effective political head of Hamas.•

A committed Islamist, al-Rantisi rose to prominence with Hamas during the first Palestinian Intifada in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
He was arrested by Israel several times, spending as much as two and a half years in prison on one occasion.
In late 1992, the doctor was among more than 400 Palestinians deported to Lebanon.
He became a spokesman for the deportees in his camp, Marj al-Zahur.

Second 2004 assassination of Hamas founder
On the evening of 17 April 2004, the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi, aged 56, was assassinated by missiles fired by Israeli warplanes on the car he was traveling in.[2] In addition two of his bodyguards were killed.[1] The operation was considered part of a campaign to eliminate the leaders of the groups fighting in the uprising.[3] The assassination led to widespread condemnation around the world.[4] Hamas spokesman Ismail Haniyeh vowed to avenge the death, saying the sacrifice would not be in vain.[5]
