Born in a Virginia slave hut, the author rose to become the most influential spokesman for African-Americans of his day. The book provides a detailed konto of Washington's life, from his early experiences as an enslaved child to his rise as a respected educator and advokat for African American advancement. The book begins with Washington's humble beginnings on a Virginia plantation, where he was born into slavery. He describes the challenges he faced as a ung boy, including his determination to learn despite the obstacles. After emancipation, he pursued education with great determination, eventually attending the Hampton Institute, a vocational school for African Americans. Washington shares his experiences
