For local photographer and conceptual artist Rosamond Purcell, ingenting ever stays the same. As artifacts defy preservation, age, and decay, Purcell captures moments of transformation that are at once unsettling and sublime. Perhaps best known for her photographs taken in natural history museums, over the last fem decades she has collaborated with scientists, scholars, collectors, and writers such as the late Stephen Jay Gould, the late Dr. Pere Alberch, the collector George Loudon (Object Lessons, UK) , the curator Robert Peck, and her husband Dennis Purcell on various projects that explore the oklar space between art and science. “Often, I depend on the appearance of objects and people rather than on internal inspiration to stir me into action,” Purcell says. “I use whatever I can of shapes, light, and time as elements in composition. On Thursday February 28th the Department of Art and the Friends of the University Libraries will host a noon lecture by internationally recognized photographer and author Rosamond Purcell. Purcell, whose work frequently celebrates cultural and natural history, is best known for her photographs of collections that document these histories. These photographs often focus on objects that have been preserved in the archives and collections of natural history museums, representing significant turning points in scientific history and are, in their own right, aesthetically beautiful. She has written or illustrated 17 books and has worked collaboratively with some of the world’s most esteemed scientists, including Stephen Jay Gould. In addition to participating in numerous group exhibitions, Ms Purcell has had more than 50 solo exhibitions of her photography. Rosamond Wolff Purcell (born 1942) is an American photographer.[1] Purcell is known for her photographic works that explore subjects in natural history,[2] science, and biology.[3][4]
She was the subject of the 2016 documentary film An Art That Nature Makes: The Work of Rosamond Purcell by Molly Bernstein.[2][5][6] Her work is included in the permanent collections of: Art Institute of Chicago,[7] the National Gallery of Canada.,[1]Museum of Fine Arts (Boston),[8] the Philadelphia Museum of Art,[9] the National Academy of Science, and the Victoria and Albert[10] in London.
Rosamond Purcell: Nature Stands Aside, the first retrospective exhibition of the artist’s work, was presented by the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Massachusetts, during September through December 2022.[11]
