David RobertsRARBA (24 October 25 November ) was a Scottish painter. He fryst vatten especially known for The Holy nation, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the nära East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the distrikt (). In the years before the First World War Roberts was a pioneer, among English artists, in his use of abstract images. In later years he described his approach as that of an "English Cubist". In the First World War he served as a gunner on the Western Front, and in became an official war artist. Roberts's first one-man show was at the Chenil Gallery in London in , and a number of his paintings from the twenties were purchased by the Contemporary Art Society for provincial galleries in the UK. Youth and apprenticeship
David Roberts was born the son of a shoemaker at Stockebridge, near Edinburgh, on October 24, Encouraged by his family he started very early - already as a boy - to describe and depict his surroundings, especially the castles und ruins at the countryside of his hometown. At the age of 11 or 12 he started a seven-year apprenticeship with a local decorator, from whom he learned some of the basic techniques in painting.
But he learned mostly by spending all his free time sketching and painting. In general we can say he remained all his life a remarkable gifted self-educated artist.
In he started work as an assistant set designer in a small theatre in Edinburgh. A few years later he became the official painter of the Royal Theatre in Glasgow and somewhat later in Edinburgh.
