    François Hollande is a former President of France (). 

    Born in Rouen, France in , Mr Hollande graduated with a Bachelor&#;s degree in Law from Panthéon-Assas University and then attended the École Nationale d&#;Administration (ENA). He graduated from the ENA in , and entered the prestigious Cour des Comptes, a Frenchadministrative court charged with conducting financial and legislative audits of most public institutions, including the National Government. 

    Prime Minister Hollande began his political career in , as a special advisor to newly elected President François Mitterrand. In , Hollande then became a member of the National Assembly, and was elected First Secretary of the Socialist Party in , replacing Lionel Jospin, who became Prime Minister under President Jacques Chirac. In , he would go on to be elected mayor of Tulle, a position he held until That year he resigned as First Secretary and was immediately elected to replace Jean-Pierre Dupont as President

    Ms Royal's stunning comeback came after the Socialists were left badly bruised by big local election losses and bleak economic data at the end of March.

    The humiliating poll results, which saw big gains for conservatives and the far-right National Front (FN), forced the president into his first major reshuffle.

    In a short televised address after the elections, Mr Hollande vowed to lead a "fighting government" and said it was "time for a new direction".
