    Economically, the country suffered the impact of a global inflation surge following the COVID pandemic. Politically, in January PresidentSergio Mattarella was re-elected for a second term, and in February the Italian government responded to the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a partner of the North Atlantic Alliance, authorising weapons shipments to Ukraine. The country also experienced a government crisis, with subsequent elections bringing into office the first female Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni.
