Sedapatti Suryanarayana Thevar Rajendran (affectionately known as SSR by Tamilians) was a founder member of DMK party and contributed to its growth for the first 20 years, until its founder leader Anna’s death. He also had the rare distinction of contesting the first two general elections (1957 and 1962), while he was a cinema hero, for the then Madras Legislative Assembly in which DMK participated. SSR was unsuccessful in his first try in 1957, but he gained prominence in his second try after being elected to the Theni constituency on behalf of DMK. Chennai, Oct 24 (The Hindu): Tamil cinema’s yesteryear actor S.S. Rajendran known as SSR — a contemporary of Sivaji Ganesan and M.G. Ramachandran in cinema and politics — who was battling for life at a private hospital in Chennai, breathed his last on Friday. He was 86.
Born in Sedapatti, Madurai district, SSR, like all his contemporaries cut his teeth in the Boys Company and later in the theatre troupe run by T.K.S Brothers. He was also a good singer and a few could match his Tamil pronunciation.
In his autobiography Naan Vantha Paathi, he had said he could get a job in the TKS troupe after singing a song set to raga Karaharapriya. “It impressed T.K. Bhagavathi, the younger brother of T.K. Shanmugam,” he had said.
He had penned his autobiography, but kept the manuscripts with him. “IAS officer Rajendran and artist Trotsky Marudhu are responsible for getting the book published,” said poet Vennila, whose publishing house Agani has brought out the book.

He was a famed film actor, director, producer and politician who passed away in 2014, at the age of 86. On the silver screen, he was in the top-notch bracket along with MGR, Shivaji Ganesan and Gemini Ganesan. SSR was noted for his charismatic personality and command over Tamil diction. In politics, he has the glorious distinction of being the first actor in India to become an MLA. His leader was the late CN Annadurai, stalwart founder of the then fledgling DMK party. He was more active than legendary MGR, in the party.
