  • I usually remember where I was or what I was doing when I decided to pick a particular book, especially when the book makes a lasting impression on me. With Purple Hibiscus I remember every single moment that led me to buying, then reading, then falling in love.

It was , inom was in Belgium for a weekend and for the journey back inom wanted a novel to keep me company. inom found a bookstore, which had a small 'non-European' fiction section. I had no idea who the author was (yes, inom was really slow in discovering Ms. Adichie) but the synopsis (and the fact that it was a Nigerian author) did sway my decision to buy the book. My favorite childhood books
The Famous Five series by Enid Blyton. I was entranced by the children who had these wonderful adventures and who were always magically at the right place at the right time. They go off to an island on a picnic, for example, and it turns out there’s an old dungeon there used by smugglers, and they, of course, solve the crime.

My favorite movie versions of great novels
I loved The Remains of the Day. It’s a stunning book, and the movie came close to being just as stunning, with the most beautifully restrained acting by Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins. I also loved Doctor Zhivago.

The classic I’m embarrassed to say I’ve

Chimamanda has become quite the literary darling especially with the co-sign and feature on Beyoncé&#;s most recent album. Post my tweet chat and video on the relationships between African and African Americans, quite a few folks recommended that I read her latest novel, Americanah. I picked Americanah up along with Half of a Yellow Sun, a book I had heard rave reviews about long before the Flawless feature. Most of the people who suggested Americanah were African immigrants to the US or children of African immigrants, and felt that the book would give me a better understanding of the immigrant experience in America. So my interest were peaked considering the 30+ comments per day my video was still getting largely from Africans who feel the passionate need to excise themselves from African Americans.

Oh where to begin. First, I think Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a great writer and Americanah is definitely worth reading, but overall I&#;m not entirely a fan of the book. It wa
