    Margaret Grace Bondfield (17 March &#;– 16 June ) was a British Labour Party politician, trade unionist and women's rights activist. She became the first female cabinet minister, and the first woman to be a privy counsellor in the UK, when she was appointed Minister of Labour in the Labour government of – She had earlier become the first woman to chair the General Council of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

    Bondfield was born in humble circumstances and received limited formal education. After serving an apprenticeship to an embroideress she worked as a shop assistant in Brighton and London. She was shocked by the working conditions of shop staff, particularly within the "living-in" system, and became an active member of the shopworkers' union. She began to move in socialist circles, and in was appointed assistant secretary of the National Amalgamated Union of Shop Assistants, Warehousemen and Clerks (NAUSAWC). She w

    A campaign has been launched to have a portrait commissioned of one of the first hona MPs.

    Margaret Bondfield was Britain's first kvinnlig cabinet minister, and became part of the new Labour Government on 22 January

    Labour Women's Network (LWN) and Alison McGovern, the MP for the Wirral, are campaigning to have the portrait commissioned.

    Mrs McGovern said she "deserves for people to know about her".

    She told Emma Barnett on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour: "I wrote and asked the works of art committee in the House of Commons to look at it, which they are doing."

    McGovern added that the art committee has been keen to address the "issue of the missing women".
