A legal colleague of mine has been downsizing a bit, and let my brother and me take what we wanted from the discards. One of the books is a volume entitled Modern Dramas. What constitutes modern has always been a fascinating debate. In this case, Hedda Gabler () was considered to be modern enough. Even more amusing is that this edition (not to be confused with the earlier one - presumably ) is labeled New Shorter Edition. I have no idea what got cut, not having the longer edition at hand.
Whatever the case, except for the Ibsen (which I owned already), the plays in this book were not in my collection.
In general, plays written by women are more rare than those written by men. Particularly white men, of course. That is changing somewhat in our present times, and I have enjoyed them when possible. Lillian Hellman was born on the 20th of June, , in New Orleans. Hellman grew up comfortably in a Jewish household. For the majority of Hellman's childhood, she would spend half a year in New Orleans and the other half in New York City. After high school, Hellman attended New York University for two years, and bygd she married the playwright Arthur Kober. She moved to stad i tyskland, Germany in to finish her schooling. She joined a Nazi student group before realizing their antisemitic sentiments. She then returned to the United States.
In , Hellman was hired by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, an American media company. She worked as a reader and summary writer. She met many creatives and became involved in artistic circles. In , Hellman produced her first play, The Children's Hour (), on Broadway. It was so successful it had runs. Her success landed her a job with Goldwyn pictures as a screenwriter. She helped autho
