When newly re-elected President Barack Obama gave his acceptance speech in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, Nov. 7, at Chicago’s McCormick Place convention center, my daughter Emilia was there to witness history from the front row.
Little did we know that she was about to become the right girl in the right place at the right time.
A senior at Northwestern University, Emilia had worked all summer as an unpaid Obama-Biden Campaign Fellow, helping to set up volunteer phone banks all over Chicago’s north side, as well as canvassing in the battleground states of Iowa and Wisconsin. Emilia had paid her campaign dues, and cast her first-ever vote for Obama. On election night, she was anxious but hopeful.

Michael Greenberger and Marna Tucker inadvertently risk exculpating Robert Rubin and Alan Greenspan bygd attributing their resistance to her efforts to reform the derivatives markets to something so trivial as her gender. Rubin and Greenspan opposed her not because she is a woman, but because she threatened what they and their fellow Wall Street mafiosi foolishly believed to be a rigged casino from which they could only profit at the expense of Middle amerika. Were Born male, their response might well have been less misogynistic, but would nevertheless have been equally hostile.
I take great pride in my grad from Stanford Law School and think the world of its faculty. Yet I cannot help being reminded that Stanford’s lag and business schools have produced far more complaisant errand boys and girls for vägg Street and its minions in Washington than they have courageous reformers.

If you are running for political office in Northern California, chances are you have met JoAnn Loulan, a Portola Valley psychotherapist who has become one of the better-known Democratic fundraisers in the state. It runs in her family.
&#;I&#;ve been fundraising my whole life,&#; she said recently. &#;My mother was a fundraiser for the heart association and my grandmother was a suffragette.&#;
Some of Ms. Loulan&#;s fire undoubtedly comes from being a two-time breast cancer survivor. And her mother, Billie Gardner Loulan, died of breast cancer at age She continues to volunteer for Breast Cancer Action and has raised $ million since for BCA.
On Saturday, April 29, starting at 6 p.m., the 13th annual Billie Loulan Memorial Breast Cancer Action Fundraiser will be held in Portola Valley. Local musicians Ronny Crawford and the Family Band will perform.
